Da Longhornz Stomp to War

Feb 23rd, 2022

All five meganobz of Da Longhornz have received a fresh coat of paint and are eager to get krumpin!

Over the last couple weeks, I continued marching towards my goal of painting a 500-point Combat Patrol for Da Ironbullz by finishing up my first unit of five Meganobz: Da Longhornz.

Not too much to say here, so let's jump straight into the pictures:

Da Longhornz

I've continued to tweak my color recipes and weathering strategies for Da Ironbullz, and with this mob I feel like I'm getting closer to my ideal palette. One lesson I've learned is that extreme edge highlights are necessary prior to glazing (as in the primary reds and yellows above), since the glaze subdues more subtle highlights to the point of not being dramatic enough.

Another tweak I attempted with these models was applying the base layer of battle damage with a sponge. I've known for 10+ years that this is a commonly recommended approach but have never tried it out. On balance, I think I like the effect better than applying battle damage via brush, but I also learned that you need to be very precise & careful when dabbing your sponge onto each model as there is a moderate risk for wayward sponge bits smearing paint onto parts of the model you didn't want to weather!

Clearly these ladz still need to be properly based, which is next on my agenda. I hope to return soon with some photos of the mob once they're stomping through the streets of Tsaragrad!
