Test bases
Dec 1st, 2019
I'm kicking off the project with a set of four test bases for my first test Orks.
I had a specific aesthetic I wanted to achieve with the bases & terrain in this project:
- Dark grey dirt with burnt brown hues
- Near-black asphalt roads
- Medium-dark true grey urban rubble (slightly different from dirt)
- Medium-to-light grey poured concrete
- Metal bits, mostly rusted and/or oily/greasy
- Dead grass tufts, used sparingly
- Lots of oil marks, scorch marks, craters, and soot
I intentionally aimed for minimal use of light colors on bases: I wanted to keep the bases muted and murky in tones to provide a backdrop for the bright colors on the Orks to pop, but also wanted the bases to be extremely detailed and lovingly crafted.
In terms of materials for these bases, I used:
- Mixed gravel fill = open ground & dirt
- Cork topped with a layer of drywall filler = broken pavement slabs
- 1/4" foamboard = poured concrete
- Plasticard struts & rods = rusted building materials & pipes
- Grid/tile cut from plasticard sheet = concrete tiles
- Copper wire = electrical cables
- Larger rocks/shale = ruined concrete building sides
- Shaped polystyrene = concrete
- Metal mesh = chain-link fencing or other metal grids
- Dead static grass clumps (used sparingly)
Here's how they turned out:
Pretty happy with these!
